Every channel that is opened needs to have coins locked which can then be moved off-chain between the two channel partners. There's no way around this.

The standard situation is that the channel opener provides all liquidity for a channel. All coins are then on his side of the channel while the channel partner has zero at the beginning.

Technically it's possible to open a channel with 50:50 or any other balance distribution, so now both channel partners would have to contribute somehow to the channel liquidity (I don't know the details and never used this). While this gives both sides immediate receiving capacity, it doesn't change the fast that coins have to be locked in a channel.

If you want a channel without contributing coins, you have to convince someone to open a channel to your node. Well, someone would have to have a reason to do this.

You can use Phoenix wallet. And yes, it's a small ightning node:

Nope. QR codes are basically BOLT11 Lighning invoices i.e "pay me" stickers. No issue with scanning them - you're not going to get infected from one.

I never had the chance to run my own LN node and probably this could be my calling for it.

My knowledge is not that great so if possible someone can create a detailed guide on how to do it will really help me as well as many others who are not really tech savvy.

PS. For me this means that I've sent my first LN funds (towards WoS and back to my Phoenix), yay! While now I understand better you-know-who's point that "LN is not bitcoin", I also understand much better LN strength.

• I went to settings and clicked on electrum server
• I I didn't use a custom server I used electrum.qtornado.com whose port is 50002

Open channels will appear on any of the Lightning Network explorer websites, and their balance and node name will appear on such sites, for example on the 1ML site.

Although it lets you provide ownership information, you don't have to do that, and a simple screenshot of the Channels page of your wallet app is enough for verification.

That is good progress, now you just have to go to the Receive section, where a QR code is waiting for you. Scan it on your phone and send any amount of sats >10000 to the address and it will open the channel for you. Or you can simply copy/paste the address and amounts from the clipboard.

Receiving sats #
The first thing to do after installation is to fund your wallet with sats. This can be done either with onchain bitcoins or via the Lightning Network. After a few welcome screens, we are greeted by a screen offering to pay an open Lightning invoice (an invoice where you can specify the amount to be paid at your choice). Please note that the minimum deposit amount is 10,000 sats, which is due to the need to open a channel through which you will later send and receive sats. Opening a channel is done with onchain transaction, which is associated with miner fees.

Please note that in both cases, the first deposit will require an onchain miner fee and a one-time fee of 1000 sats to the wallet developers. This is due to the need to open the channel. Consider it as a fee for escaping from custodial storage of your sats.

I am about to give this a try. I haven't used my Bitcoin Full Node on Raspberry Pi 400 for quite some time now and so this will help me sync my bitcoin core up to date.

That's good. Let me know if it has finished syncing because maybe there has been some progress since you posted this.

Regarding the node URL, all you need is the channel ID, and then there are a couple of sites that allow you to "claim" your node like 1ML. If you go to their wesites then they have some instructions for doing that.

Can you please say a few more words on this? Because I've simply transferred some sats on-chain and I've got channel opened for me. And since then I've done transfers between my Phoenix wallet and my test WalletoSatoshi.

What is inbound liquidity in layman's term?

Afaik that's how much money you can receive on that LN channel if don't spend any (it's like a bottle or jar that may be full or empty or in between).

The bitcoin core is still running and is currently at 82% approximately and so we'll have to wait another few days for it to sync fully.
Meanwhile I have gone through some of the documentation and decided to go with Core Lightning using the GUI version from Umbrel App store.
Let me know your thoughts on this or whether I should go for anything else.
