This story is a made up story.

I see so many obvious things that makes me believe that nothing like this actually happened. First, you mentioned that the victim was tracked because of a space he held on X and if that’s true then it means that those guys already have the rough idea of the amount he possesses so paying them off with just a thousand dollars it sound so fake.

If it was true, what they’ll do is to take him (kidnap him) and then pressure him to reveal the location - this is because his money is in the public domain so they know rough estimates and definitely won’t settle for a just a thousand dollars.
I said he spoke on a space not host a space ser, secondly rough Idea of how much he possessed, yes, that is why they tracked him down, but do you read where I said he was attacked and made to unlock his Smartphone, ser, I don't know why they they didn't take him to the location of the rest and I really thank God they didn't, but I guess because it was just easier to make do with what they got, my guy doesn't go out with his smartphone till today. Since there's really no how I can prove it to you, I don't know what else to say

Are there other incidence you heard about or aware of either through the media or personally?
Can you share with us so we can all learn?

Yes, there's been a robbery this year in the US where a female streamer was attacked. The attackers were later caught. ]
According to the sources she said during the stream that she holds $20m in BTC and some kids thought that money is worth the risk.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/1jc4592/houston_crime_four_teens_charged_in_bitcoin/

Remember guys, don't talk about your crypto, especially if you own more than 1 BTC. That's now money people would kill for.

It's a remembrance to them and as well as a reminder for us to never flaunt our assets in the public. Yes, we're holders and we like to show how enthusiastic we are.

But days are evil nowadays. It has started with a $5 wrench attacks to kidnappings and now, kill*ngs.

That is sad that it had happened to these people that are also part of our community, I mean global holders community.

So keep that mouth shut if someone is trying to push you to talk about your bitcoin assets.

While I don't have any issues with been public about the amount of btc you own, I would advice you stay cautious because people have actually been tracked down, almost killed, some killed because of their btc holdings.
Money has always been a motivator for all kinds of intent even bad ones. So it is expected that a lot of people would target those with bitcoin holdings because bitcoin is the one known valuable asset right now and it is in such a demand that everyone wants to get their hands on it one way or another. If you have the money, learn how to protect yourself.

There's an actual difference between owning some Bitcoin investment and trading Bitcoin.
What I believe is that, those killed in the story had Bitcoin savings held up and the kidnappers knew this and killed them for it. Am sure if the dead in the story were traders and people saw how depressed and emotionally drained they looked sometimes, while complaining how badly the market went after the days trade, they won't have been tortured for their passwords to steal their Bitcoin.

Whatever be the case, it is wise to always avoid intoxication and play dumb around any group of persons who are nonchalantly asking you personal questions and showing curiosity in your knowledge and use case strategy for Bitcoin as a currency, because they may be perpetrators of a crime that is waiting to happen or they are spies and report back to someone who is behind the scenes.

If someone is owning tens of millions or maybe hundreds of millions dollar worth in bitcoin with self custody I think it's also time for them to think about security like hiring body guards because lets be real other rich people are doing the same thing even though they hold no bitcoin.

Definitely in this case, security should always be a concern, people would steal few hundred dollars let alone million, always better to have precaution.

One of the reason we should use testnet coins before using the bitcoin protocol coins. The other reason being adoption.

In 2022, a very close friend of mine narrowly escaped been killed
All the most interesting stories start exactly like this. Smiley

because he spoke about his bitcoin holding on a Twitter space, this particular incident is not on any media nor was it even reported to the law enforcement agency because I come from a 3rd world country.
That's why such stories can be hard to believe. This doesn't mean that if an event wasn't covered in the media, it didn't happen, but in the case of law enforcement, things look a little different. I'll return to this point below.

He went totally off grid by deleting all his social media account since that incidence and rarely even use the internet today. What happened was that after the space, he observed he got some good amount of twitter follower, little did he know that a serial killer was among,
A serial killer? But as we'll read below, there were several people who attacked your friend. And as far as we know, serial killers kill their victims, not leave them alive, as in your friend's case. This is one of the inconsistencies in your story.

he was been trailed and monitored until they got his location and sought him out. Dude was coming back home from the supermarket when he was attacked, he thought it was a usual robbery until the perpetrator demanded for his phone and asked him to open his Xverse wallet(Unknown to them that he had a hard wallet and there was only a little holding in that Xverse wallet). The little amount he had there, about $1k was withdrawn to another wallet immediately and they dealt with him so badly after that, luckily, he wasn't killed but seriously injured and had to take himself to the clinic after the incidence,
The clinic would likely have asked a reasonable question about what happened to him, and it would have been revealed (from the examination and analysis of the injuries) that an assault had been committed, and such information is always passed on to law enforcement (I'm not sure that's how it works in your country). In other words, the police would have learned of what happened.

infact when narrating to me, he said they had guns and one of the guys said he should be killed but the others disagreed and they left him.
Maybe it was that guy who was the serial killer? Smiley

This is not a fiction, true life story. Begged him several times to come online and share his ordeal but he has refused adamantly every time, I hope one day he can share so others can learn.
But believing what happened is not always easy.

You can't get killed for owning bitcoin, that makes no sense.
We should all be dead by now if owning bitcoin is why others are dead.
They are creating attention for the public, they became a target to those who needs what they had.
The problem is not bitcoin, the problem is their mouth.
These dead people would be dead if Bitcoin never existed, why? Because if Gold is all they had they will still flaunt it.
Nobody will know if you have some Bitcoin, until you decide to tell them, Bitcoin is one of the most secretive asset anyone can own.

Anyone who is holding a big amount of BTC you will not make it open to anybody that you are holding a big amount of BTC because people might to come for you so there mighty attack you because of holding a big amount of Bitcoin, if you really want to hold a bitcoin don't expose it to people around you let it be in secret so that your life will be spare, right now people will come to a house and force you to give them your bitcoin wallet password and after exposing it to them they will still take the person's life. So let us learn how to keep our mouth shut when we are holding larger amounts of Bitcoin or a public funds

Is not advisable to be exposing what you have because you will always end up putting your self in a big problem. Even you have small bitcoin is better you keep it save without telling anyone what you have in your wallet because immediately you open your mouth and says you have such amount of bitcoin in your wallet you don't really know who are good and bad they will always find you and track your location to achieve all what you have. If not because of forum you can probably share about your experience about bitcoin and some profits you generate or makes you lose in your investment journey, which other can learn from your mistakes we should have been even hiding that we have bitcoin but I think anyone that have much knowledge and experience about bitcoin most have some few bitcoin in there wallet to get profit when ever the price increases in the market.

We just need to be always careful and know things we can share in public and things we can hide without saying it out but some are saying because of the happiness they have they will like to says to other to help him feel much good and you don't really know which type of people you talk about your good deeds.

Talking openly about how much Bitcoin you own might sound harmless but it can easily turn into a dangerous mistake money attracts attention and not always the good kind Bitcoin especially has become one of the most valuable and traceable digital assets and stories of people getting robbed or kidnapped because of their holdings aren’t rare the fact that it’s decentralized and often stored privately makes it even more tempting for criminals because they know if they can force you to give up your keys there’s no way for the funds to be reversed or recovered. The difference you mentioned between holding Bitcoin and trading it is real long term holders are more likely to be targeted because their wallets usually hold large amounts for long periods traders on the other hand are constantly moving money around and they rarely keep big balances in one place plus the emotional stress and visible frustration of trading doesn’t exactly make them look rich to outsiders but either way caution is necessary for anyone involved with crypto.

It’s smart to keep a low profile don’t discuss how much Bitcoin you have or where it’s stored especially in public places or with casual acquaintances being intoxicated or too open in conversations can expose more information than you realize people asking too many curious questions might not be innocent and in some cases could be scouting for details to pass on to others.

You should have added the links to were you read about these cases you mentioned so we can also read and get the full report on what actually happened. Without those links to the sources how do we know if these cases you reported are true or not. Or were those cases you cited not reported to the police or media, because if they weren't how did you come across those cases? You don't just cite cases without sources and expect us to believe they are all true, even though your points are valid.

Damn, thats a serious story, your friend survived, thats lucky ! &  yeah  I totally agree, people underestimate how dangerous it can be to show off your Bitcoin hodling online. When somethin like BTC is borderless &  untraceable, it naturally attracts both innovators &  criminals. Thats why OPSEC is everything. Never ever share your stack, never tell or sign which wallet you use whatever peopel influnce you &  definitely keep your cold storage setup a secret.

Ha ha ! No gold flexing vibe here, Bitcoiners must be smart as hell. honestly the risks have increased with the price increase, so staying lowkey is the best insurance. If you want to play you have to be smart !

OP you are correct that people have been attacked and some killed because of making the number of the Bitcoin they are holding public, there was a news I saw some time ago and it was also posted here in this forum where a family was attacked by gun men because they wanted to steal some Bitcoin in the couples wallet however they were lucky that the gun men was unable to penetrate or enter their house and immediately they call the police, and the reason why this gun men decided to attack the couples was because they made known to the public the amount of Bitcoin they are holding which is a very huge amount of Bitcoin and that attracted those gun men into their home, it is very important for us to keep the number of Bitcoin we are holding private so as to avoid things like this, I know some people will still be doubting but this is not the time to doubt because it happens and if you go online you will see some news about the same thing.
If you tell the public the amount of Bitcoin you're holding you automatically putting yourself in danger so keep it private and be safe.

I don’t even see any point why someone would just have to open up to the public about owning a certain number of Bitcoin or why they would openly claim to be a Bitcoin holder in anyway. What are they doing it for? Is it just to attract the attention of others and show that they’re rich? What does that even mean? If that’s the case, I view those doing that as fools, because they know they’re putting themselves in danger. Even if thieves don’t come for them, it’s very possible that even close people might be eyeing what they have, which could lead to an attack later. A lot of things happen, but only a few are being discussed online. Some people have been found dead, but nobody knows what actually led to their deaths. It’s possible it was an attack because of what they’re claiming on social media to have.

It's not only bitcoin that will make people attack you. If you also have gold, diamond and excess fiat in your custody and people are aware about it, they will plan to attack you. This is why you need to keep your bitcoin or other form of wealth a secret instead of bragging with them on social media or in public. No one can attack Satoshi if tgey see him despite his one million bitcoin that the world knows about because Satoshi is anonymous. It's same if you have bitcoin and didn't tell anyone.

In 2022, a very close friend of mine narrowly escaped been killed because he spoke about his bitcoin holding on a Twitter space, this particular incident is not on any media nor was it even reported to the law enforcement agency because I come from a 3rd world country. He went totally off grid by deleting all his social media account since that incidence and rarely even use the internet today. What happened was that after the space, he observed he got some good amount of twitter follower, little did he know that a serial killer was among, he was been trailed and monitored until they got his location and sought him out. Dude was coming back home from the supermarket when he was attacked, he thought it was a usual robbery until the perpetrator demanded for his phone and asked him to open his Xverse wallet(Unknown to them that he had a hard wallet and there was only a little holding in that Xverse wallet). The little amount he had there, about $1k was withdrawn to another wallet immediately and they dealt with him so badly after that, luckily, he wasn't killed but seriously injured and had to take himself to the clinic after the incidence, infact when narrating to me, he said they had guns and one of the guys said he should be killed but the others disagreed and they left him. This is not a fiction, true life story. Begged him several times to come online and share his ordeal but he has refused adamantly every time, I hope one day he can share so others can learn.
The problem is not in using the internet or social media; the problem is sharing real-time images and clips of yourself, exposing your location and surroundings. You might think it's fun and cool, people like your posts and videos or pictures, and they enjoy watching you, but you should also know that you are basically exposing yourself to threats that you aren't even thinking of. People need to understand that privacy matters, even if they want to become influencers or whatnot, it's important for them to make sure that they at least don't share their location or surroundings online for people to see.

Showing your face alone wouldn't create that much trouble for you, because that isn't going to give them any hint that they can use to track you down, unless they accidentally see you somewhere outside and then start chasing you, but that doesn't happen a lot, but if you leak your location, then you become an easy target for them.

Millions of people, definitely more than 100 million people, own Bitcoin. How many people we know that died for owning Bitcoin? Only a few. This doesn't mean that we should be afraid of owning a Bitcoin. I own a signet Bitcoin ring for years and I've never been afraid to say that I own a Bitcoin. Even when I wasn't an adult, I was always talking about Bitcoin and it has significantly helped me to gain professors' attention in the university and at some point, it helped me to get A marks.

Btw we should definitely be silent about how many Bitcoins we own. If you own 0.5 Bitcoin or more, it's not safe to publicly declare it because it's too much money in many countries and you might get into trouble. If you have lots of Bitcoins and are an influencer, then you should hire a guard to my mind.

I agree that it’s better not to tell everyone that you own bitcoin,at least, not to brag about it or talk openly about mining or accumulating it. It’s simply not safe, just like with any other valuable asset, boasting too much can attract the wrong kind of attention. Of course, it’s worth discussing and finding like-minded people, because being surrounded by others who share your interests helps you grow faster. However, it’s still very important to be cautious when talking about the exact numbers in your account, even with those you trust, they might accidentally let something slip to the wrong people.
