I am planning to buy a hardware wallet like Nano Ledger S to store my bitcoin there for few years and forget about it.

But do I need to update the firmware constantly? Or can I just put it there and forget it ?

I would also like to know this too since i'm having thoughts of getting one. Some kind of maintenance to the hardware maybe?

It really depends on the update. If a major security flaws were found like in Trezor before, and fixed in a Firmware update for example, you must update If you don't want to have your bitcoins at risk otherwise, It's not really necessary.

Its not necessary to update it frequently. Like the post above says, its advised to update it when a security flaw has been detected.
But even if you don't update it when there is a security flaw detected this doesn't mean your coins are at risk.
Especially if you want to forget about your coins. As long you are not using your nano s.. there is no risk of losing your coins (even with flaws, exploits, ..).
But in general.. its always better to keep everything up to date.

the most important thing is your seed. it doesn't matter what happens to your ledger or ledger itself. as long as you have the seed you have your coins.

i can imagine there will be firmware updates in the future that'll be mandatory. we don't know what'll be uncovered in the future.

Its better if you keep your device updated with any new security update.
