satscraper, where did you buy the new display to replace the old one?
You can buy it online on Alibaba.com This link still works. It's for the 12 Pin display. Apparently, some Nano S wallets have 15 pins, but I find this hard to believe. Anyways, just to be sure, you can always open your device and count the pins to make sure you don't order the wrong one.

Can the same fix also be done on an old Trezor One too?
If you have the skills for it, sure. It's more complicated, though. After a quick look, I couldn't find a YouTube video that covers the process of replacing Trezor One displays. It requires soldering and some equipment. Replacing the Nano S display is much easier. There is some information about that at the bottom of this reddit thread. Check it out.

I've been using Trezor Safe 3 for the past few days and considering that I was using the Model One for a very long time, everything was straightforward.
- FWIW, the main reason for the upgrade was firmware updates (the secure element was secondary for me).

  • I did some shooting [or rather tossing] practice by throwing it into my drawer from around 5 meters and it led to a couple of chipped parts... It's worth noting that the display part can easily get scratched and in terms of quality, I'm not a fan of the included cable [Model One came with a better one]:

Don't think for a second that Trezor is making durable hardware wallets like Casio G-Shock watches Wink
However, they are selling TPU bumpers for Trezor 3 and 5, as well as Silicone Gloves for Trezor One and T.
This can be used for additional protection if you are willing to pay around €10, or you can simply 3d print your own case.
I would also suggest adding simple foil adhesive to screen to protect it from scratches.
https://trezor.io/bumper-trezor-safe-3-black

PS
As for short cable I don't think this is an issue as Trezor 3 uses USB-C connection like most smartphones today.

Why would you do that with a brand-new device? To clarify, you were throwing the new Safe 3 and not the old Model One?
Now I understand why you guys are breaking your hardware wallets. No wonder when you use them as boomerangs and stones for throwing. Grin
I hope your next experiment won't be running into a wall head first and then complaining about headaches. Cheesy

I will add the Trezor Safe 3 next to your name in the table.

I am sure he did it for testing purposes obviously, and I think he dropped the Trezor One also, they are not that expensive to ''play'' with.
Something I would like to see is in future is ultra durable hardware wallet, that is water and drop resistant.
Maybe Trezor can integrate those bumpers and add stronger gorilla glass in Trezor 3+ and 5+.
Note that card format hardware wallets like Satochip are already water resistant.

Maybe it is time for revival for one of my topics Most Durable Hardware Wallets:

Don't think for a second that Trezor is making durable hardware wallets like Casio G-Shock watches Wink
I learned it the hard way and I blame Model One for making me think their latest models would be way more tougher than they actually are.

However, they are selling TPU bumpers for Trezor 3 and 5, as well as Silicone Gloves for Trezor One and T.
This can be used for additional protection if you are willing to pay around €10, or you can simply 3d print your own case.
Unfortunately, the official reseller that I purchased my Safe 3 from doesn't sell any of the accessories [my best bet would be to go with the DIY route and 3D print a protective case for myself].

I would also suggest adding simple foil adhesive to screen to protect it from scratches.
Thank you but unfortunately, it's already too late for me [the damage is done, but scratches aren't visible from the angle at which I took the first picture].

As for short cable I don't think this is an issue as Trezor 3 uses USB-C connection like most smartphones today.
You're right about its length, but I noticed the Model One that I have came with a higher-quality cable [at this point, I think they should stop shipping their products with cables since they're quite short and no longer that good].

Why would you do that with a brand-new device? To clarify, you were throwing the new Safe 3 and not the old Model One?
Yes, I did it with my new Safe 3, but I did the same thing many times with the Model One and it never led to any chipped parts.

Now I understand why you guys are breaking your hardware wallets. No wonder when you use them as boomerangs and stones for throwing. Grin

What's the obsession with ultra-durable hardware devices and protective cases? I mean from people in general, not you specifically. You are not supposed to throw them against the wall or drive them over with your car. They will survive normal use for years.

Yes, I did it with my new Safe 3, but I did the same thing many times with the Model One and it never led to any chipped parts.
Better quality plastics and maybe some luck on your part. You didn't get the angle right to damage it.

Why would you do that with a brand-new device?
I wanted to ask the same question. If you accidentally break it years later, your seed backup is enough. I can think of many ways to destroy a hardware wallet, and many more ways to keep it safe. I like to use delicate hardware in such a way that it never gets damaged. It's not the visual chipped parts I'd worry about, but potential internal damage. I'm already very careful with the USB connector, those things are fragile and cables are short. I wouldn't trust Chinese cables with it though, many USB-cables come with chips inside nowadays.

For what it's worth: I don't think I've ever even broken a phone screen, and my phone travels a lot more than my hardware wallet.

Is this a particular habit of yours to throw stuff into your drawer from some distance? I'm just curious.

While I sort of admire that you immediately tried such a test with your new device, I certainly won't do that with any electronic device I own and which is probably not designed to withstand such treatment.

I've no problem with wear marks overall which accumulate over time by normal usage but I don't like marks that came from careless treatment and which probably could've been avoided.

I doubt that it pays to construct and build a very durable device for such a niche market. Who would want to pay the substantially extra for a titanium or other extra durable material casing and a gorilla or even saphire glas option? It simply doesn't really count for a manufacturer to offer an extra durable option to the normal stuff.

On the other hand: poor (usually cheap) material choice is inexcusable in my opinion.

To make it durable, keeping it light is probably the best approach. Most plastic items can survive dropping from the height you normally use them at.

Actually, to keep the prices low, I'd guess that no durability test is done at all by the manufacturer.
Such tests may come later on, but conducted by enthusiasts.

The logic is simple: you need one for daily use and it doesn't matter if it breaks in 1000 pieces if an accident happens, since there has to be a backup anyway. So let's keep the price down, since a good price sells better.

Better quality plastics and maybe some luck on your part. You didn't get the angle right to damage it.
You're probably right about all of the above things, but considering that I did the same thing with my Model One a lot of times in the past few years, I think the main culprit [after me] was/is lower quality plastics in their latest models.

For what it's worth: I don't think I've ever even broken a phone screen, and my phone travels a lot more than my hardware wallet.
Same here... Not a single scratch on any of the three previous phones that I had for around 3 to 4 years on average.

Is this a particular habit of yours to throw stuff into your drawer from some distance? I'm just curious.
Unfortunately, yes... It's a bad habit I picked up way before I purchased my first HW, but I only do it with small and light electronic devices [I know it sounds like I'm lazy and I probably am to some extent, but I think my age is also contributing to it a bit].

Who would want to pay the substantially extra for a titanium or other extra durable material casing and a gorilla or even saphire glas option?
To most users, those things are overkill but IIRC, there was a brand in the past that collaborated with Trezor to make a certain number of titanium-based Model Ts and it didn't last long before everything was sold out.

On the other hand: poor (usually cheap) material choice is inexcusable in my opinion.
I completely agree with you... They should've at least kept using the same material as before, but for some reason, they chose a lower-quality material.

To most users, those things are overkill but IIRC, there was a brand in the past that collaborated with Trezor to make a certain number of titanium-based Model Ts and it didn't last long before everything was sold out.
You are probably talking about the CORAZON. They produced several Trezor Model T versions and all of them sold out just like you said. However, the prices per unit were from $600 to $2000. These are collector's items and rare devices and not something random people would be interested in. I wonder how many units they manufactured? I don't think there were more than 100-200 max.

I completely agree with you... They should've at least kept using the same material as before, but for some reason, they chose a lower-quality material.
Inflation is causing all prices to go up. Perhaps they had to compromise and select plastics of lower quality in order to not put a final price tag that is 20-30% higher than what we have now.

What's the obsession with ultra-durable hardware devices and protective cases? I mean from people in general, not you specifically. You are not supposed to throw them against the wall or drive them over with your car. They will survive normal use for years.
Maybe there is a market for such ultra-durable hardware wallets. But price is the main factor probably. If such wallet wallet would cost $300-400 or more, not really sure how many buyers they would get.

For what it's worth: I don't think I've ever even broken a phone screen, and my phone travels a lot more than my hardware wallet.
Same here... Not a single scratch on any of the three previous phones that I had for around 3 to 4 years on average.
How it's possible. Whole screen of my previous phone is only scratches. And this is why I'm not buying expensive phones. I don't want to think much about protecting my phone while using it or when it's in my pocket.

Thank you but unfortunately, it's already too late for me [the damage is done, but scratches aren't visible from the angle at which I took the first picture].
You can however still prevent more damage and cover the old scratches Wink
Interesting cheap DIY ''cover'' could be made with plastic foil and a bit of heat to shape it correctly.
I know about 3d printing for plastic but I am not sure if there is something similar for silicone or rubber.

You're right about its length, but I noticed the Model One that I have came with a higher-quality cable [at this point, I think they should stop shipping their products with cables since they're quite short and no longer that good].
Nah, I have that cable and it's cheap, short crap.

For what it's worth: I don't think I've ever even broken a phone screen, and my phone travels a lot more than my hardware wallet.
Maybe you are more careful than most people.
I know a bunch of people who broke their phone screen or screen protector.

Maybe there is a market for such ultra-durable hardware wallets. But price is the main factor probably. If such wallet wallet would cost $300-400 or more, not really sure how many buyers they would get.
There is a market for durable hardware wallets, same as for any other durable things, like watches, phones, etc.a
I don't think they need to be very expensive, they just need to adopt something from G-Shock.

Indeed, those were collector items so their target audience was quite small... Based on an "old archive copy of their website", the Gold version was limited to 100 while the Stealth version was limited to 500 [they didn't mention the quantity for the Titanium version, but it was probably around 1000].

How it's possible. Whole screen of my previous phone is only scratches. And this is why I'm not buying expensive phones. I don't want to think much about protecting my phone while using it or when it's in my pocket.
A rugged phone case by Otterbox will do wonders for protecting your phone from scratches and a lot of other things [most of them come with a built-in screen protector]: e.g. Defender Series Pro for S25+

You can however still prevent more damage and cover the old scratches Wink
Interesting cheap DIY ''cover'' could be made with plastic foil and a bit of heat to shape it correctly.
You have a point, but I'm no longer confident that the adhesives used on my Safe 3 can withstand some heat.

They look like chew toys for dogs. If I had a dog, I would like him to have one of those in order to have some kind of connection to bitcoin. Grin
Are those the official silicone cases that Trezor sells on its online shop for Model One or is that something you bought elsewhere?

Yeah I have a dog and she’s bitten all of them  Tongue

Yeah they re the official silicone sleeves and the official lanyards.

They re necessary not only for crash protection but also to distinguish them! Each one serves a different purpose and has a uniquely identifiable name, which I must admit took me more time to think about, than the time spent for buying the trezors and receiving them  Tongue

~snip~

I think it's already known that dogs really like to "connect" with Trezor - it's just that after that the device takes on a slightly different look. For those who would still try, a picture is worth a thousand words.
