~snip~ It's difficult to compare, but the predicted sentence is 5-7 years, which is very short. And this will set a precedent in the US.
I'm not sure, but I think the maximum sentence for what DK was charged with is 20 years in prison. Now it's just a matter of whether he has any people who are lobbying for him and trying to reduce the sentence, and considering how long the extradition took and that he fought with all his might to avoid his homeland, he obviously thinks that the sentence in the US will be much less. Above was the news that the prosecutor is seeking the maximum prison term of 12 years. But since a deal was made with the government and the coins were returned, this term should be reduced. The court case will be held in a simplified format, and we will know the outcome in a few days. My prediction is 5-7 years, and we must take into account that Do Kwon has already been in prison for 1 year.

I didn't see this coming, and I guess most persons didn't either. The prosecutors recommended 12 years, while the defense counsel requested Do Kwon gets 5 years, but the judge went for something higher after carefully reviewing the case. According to him, he said it was a “fraud on an epic, generational scale.” A big win to all those affected. They might not have gotten their funds back, but they can find comfort knowing that justice is served.

No much of a difference between 12 and 15 years. I still think 15 years is short, thousands of people if not millions of people were scammed. Some people that were very rich that had their money in Luna went broken. He is indeed worth 15 years in jail, but such open fraudster deserves more than 15 years.

Here is a link that you can read without subscriptions or registration. https://www.nbcnews.com/world/asia/crypto-founder-kwon-sentenced-15-years-prison-40-billion-collapse-rcna248790“This was a fraud on an epic, generational scale. In the history of federal prosecutions, there are few frauds that have caused as much harm as you have, Mr. Kwon,” Engelmayer said during a hearing in Manhattan federal court. __ I also didn't expect such a verdict from the court. If a deal was struck, then how did such a long sentence come about?

Even if the deal they made was struck, that length of his sentence reflects the severity of damage it cause and that gave officials to impose more harsher penalties. Plea agreement can help him to reduce the length of his charges, but he might struggle to have this kind of settlement. I'm looking at possibilities if he have chance to get freed, but it seems that there's no immediate path towards getting his early freedom. So Do Kwon would provably stay in prison for long time.

It depends on what someone considers a long time, because 15 years seems like a long time, although for such a crime it is definitely not a lot. What no one mentions (and it's written in the article) is that after 50% of his sentence is served, DK will have the opportunity to request to be transferred to South Korea, that's part of the plea agreement. I don't know what the laws are there, so it's possible he could get more than 15 years in prison in total, or less if he gets transferred after 7.5 years and they give him less than the second half of the sentence there.

I have not seen documents about Do Kwon's deal with the US government, but I have read about it in the news. And there may also be false information. If I understand the principle of American justice correctly, Do Kwon had the choice to go to court where the jury would decide the verdict. But considering the amount of losses and the people who suffered losses, he could have received a sentence 2-3 times longer. Another option is summary proceedings, where a judge makes a verdict. There may or may not be a deal present here. I think we'll find out about this a little later.

It's likely possible that if he is transferred back to his national (South Korea) after serving 7.5 year in US prison, he might not serve the last 7.5 years complete in his national, the reason I said so is because the legal officials there could show him mercy and reduce the time frame judging by how his defender (lawyer) in court argued that his sentence should have been a 5 year imprisonment. But it will be unfair to reduce his sentence because I feel that even the 15 years sentence is not enough to compensate for the massive loss that many investors went through, even Sam Bankman of FTX was sentenced to 25 years, I expected the same 20+ years for DK.

Looking at this situation, we need to understand that compassion costs money. Do Kwon spent a lot of money in Montenegro, then had to go through a nearly year-long trial in the US, and all of this was very expensive. South Korea has very strict laws regarding fraud, which is why Do Kwon decided to go to the US. Seven years later, this material will be forgotten by everyone.

If you have invested in tokens that have also been invested by Jump Trading or Jump Capital, I reckon that you should not expect any pumps on them hehehehe. Jump Trading are being sued by Terraform Labs administrators for market manipulation that caused the bankruptcy of Terraluna and the imprisonment of Do Kwon. This might cause Jump Trading to dump their tokens to pay for their lawyers hehe. The administrator charged with steering Terraform Labs through bankruptcy has sued Jump Trading, the Chicago-based firm that played an outsize role in the collapse of the Terra blockchain in 2022.
Todd Snyder, who was confirmed to lead the Terraform Labs Wind Down Trust in September 2024, had accused Jump, several of its subsidiaries, and two of its executives of market manipulation, defrauding investors, self-dealing, and more.
“The Office of the Terraform Labs Plan Administrator has filed a $4B lawsuit against Jump Trading over its direct role in the collapse of Terraform Labs, seeking to hold Jump to account,” the administrator said in a post on X on Thursday.
“The action aims to recover value for creditors and hold Jump responsible for exploiting the ecosystem, leaving unsuspecting investors to bear the losses.”Read in full https://www.dlnews.com/articles/defi/terraform-administrator-sues-jump-trading-for-terra-collapse/
