 I have been taking an online class on cyber security courses and there is this particular topic which caught my attention about fewer papers means fewer worries, from the research i have made and notice this has proofs that people fall victim of this scam every day by day this is know to be one of the biggest risk ATM users face, people take their exposure of personal information for granted there used bank receipts and there debts card pin, most times i do advise people anytime one is done with withdrawing flat currency from the ATM machine they are some sensitive information in the receipt transition which most times it oftens show your account balance and some card numbers and this can be of help to fraudsters in hacking of once acct, and also withdrawing money in an crowded areas one can easily get pickpockets so let notes on this...

 I want to emphasize on this after using an ATM machine many scammer today take more advantage of little little piece of informations like this which i do believe people take as Nothing after you are done with the ATM machine the printed receipt are been tossed without a second thought of thinking it may be used or something it very easier for scammer to attack. After making transactions people forget to press the cancel button at the end of thier transactions this aslo should be take seriously.

Are you kidding me right now, you mean transactions receipt that is generated from the ATM machine contain your card number and pin, I don't think that is true mate, the information on the receipt is not different from the receipt you generate from your mobile app and such documents don't pause any security risks, those receipts don't even contain your account balance, so you are wrong with that assumption., If you said accepting helps from strangers on the ATM ques is risky, I will accept that but the above first paragraph statement is false receipt only contains few information such as amount of transactions and the reference and also status of the transaction, so no personal information on the receipt as you said mate.

So does pressing the cancel buttons allow you to identify whether a skimming device is present or not? As far as I understand it, skimming is an old trick and there are various ways to detect them, I'm not sure if simply pressing the cancel button is one of them though.

Maybe this depends on where you live but most ATMs already hide the buttons from cameras in my area. Still, a good idea if you live in a risky area and probably a better practice overall.

Speaking of PIN, I also doubt the receipt you get from making transactions contains your PIN info. If you find one you should report it to your bank and ask them to replace it. I do agree that it's a good idea to take the receipt for privacy reasons though. CMIIW.

well, the issue is that for most ATM machine stand, you are usually surrounded by others that want to do same transaction and if everyone tries same thing you are suggesting, believe me that the line will remain that way for way a long period of time. safety is not what should be joked with but there are better ways of going about it other than just trying to be smart in an unsmart way.

with the majority of serious transaction actually being done through the phone or through the point of sales machine, what you should be more concerned about is your phone and banking app and not your ATM card or the way you transact on the ATM machine. the majority of scammers are actually after your mobile banking apps and your phone as it contains the majority of the details that will really lead to them stealing from you. wo even makes use of the ATM machine these days with a lot of alternative options that makes the banking system more seamless and safer.

I think he is maybe referring to the information on the transaction receipt, that it can give clue to hackers on what to do, since he says he has been studying on cyber security, probably he knows a thing or two, hence it's appropriate you dispose your receipt properly to avoid any of such incident. However I agree with you that those receipt doesn't contain acc balance details, just transaction information  and abbreviated codes about What you went to the ATM to do.

This is what im doing into that bold suggestion above on which whenever i do make out some withdrawals on different ATM machines or really that being random, then i do really that tend to shake out that card slot that plastic whether its been that tampered out or being sticked out on which this is really that indeed skimming. I disagree, I always looking for crowded place over uncrowded place because crowded place means many people are safe withdrawing their money. If I was alone inside the ATM, someone could put target on me.

What you're talking about the cancel button? there's nothing like that. ATM only work if you inside the card, if you've withdraw the money, the ATM will give the money and automatically pull out your card.

I don’t know if it’s only common around a specific bank/country but I have seen many ATMs with a protective shield over the keys already so you don’t really need to use your hands anymore.

Yup. Also, look around if someone is lurking around the ATM. They may not see your keys easily but they might attack you the moment you are done withdrawing. Also it’s redundant to say ATM machine. ATM means Automated Teller Machine. So if you still add machine you are saying machine machine.

No bank receipt has ever shown account balance, it only shows transaction id, time and date of transaction, ATM card number shows like this for example 12********09.

If I may be wrong, please can you explain how this theft process can be done by just looking at your disposed bank receipt showing your account number and amount of transaction? I know for sure that your details can be used for hack, but can't be successful if you refuse to release out the OTP code sent to phone number or mail.

I am guilty of carelessly disposing transaction receipts from ATM. This might be because I have checked the receipt several times and couldn't find any exposed sensitive information. Criminals could do anything to steal, so I wouldn't doubt that they might install cameras to steal people's passwords.

A family member allowed someone to assist her in carryout a transaction in an ATM and her card was swapped. Before she got home, all her funds have been withdrawn.

Skimmers? This device has been around for decades... 20 years at least, probably even longer.

They can't take anything from us if the balance on the debit card is 0. I always empty the account and take all the cash to keep with me, scammers can do whatever they want, but in vain. The balance on the card is 0, there is no allowed minus, no credit, just one big zero... scammers can blow it. There have been times when there was a lot of money in the account, but it's mostly earmarked for something and goes away quickly.

But that's what scammers are, they are always looking for new ways to scam people. So people should be careful and be on alert, if anything (even the smallest thing) sets off a red alarm in your head, just give up and find another place.

I don't think anyone will take a risk and set a spy camera on ATM but even if they do, you can easily change your PIN and revealing of it isn't an immediate threat unless the one who spies on you from camera can quickly catch you and steal your card. One way to maximally protect yourself from such situation might be to withdraw money from the ATM that's placed inside bank's building.

well i will agree with you that it is risky out there when it comes to fraud, so we need to be really careful how we expose our personal information to people around us. sometimes it might just be out of carelessness and negligence that lead to our privacy being compromised and we got hacked. but i don't agree to the fact that receipt has a relevant information that could be used against us. the receipt only has the amount withdrawn, date and time and also the transaction id which could be used to track the transaction if any issue arises and can not be used for hacking. what is even more risky if allowing your ATM password to be seen by people around you while withdrawing fund, because if this happens your ATM card may be snached from you and will be used to withdraw all your fund in any nearest ATM, so we should try to protect our pin to avoid such problem.

This is a real danger. I haven't noticed them and I'm sure they aren't in my country because if they were, there would be news but I think it will be in many foreign countries and everyone needs to be cautious of skimming devices.

I have helped lots of people to withdraw money from ATMs. All of them were old people who wanted to withdraw their pensions. These people always ask young people for help and I've never used the advantage of that situation, I've always helped them and I hope no one will steal from them. I've never seen any younger asking for help from withdrawing ATM.

Btw I don't like moments when I have to type my PIN in an ATM and lots of people stand behind me very close. I can always change my pin with one click in my mobile bank but I still don't like this situation.

I don't know how ops got such information and as a matter of correction he hasn't come back to this thread to correct such a wrong statement, for clarity's sake, there is no way your ATM or POs and whatever transactions receipt can contain your details that could be a security threat to your account and such personal information are not even available online unless the account holder put it out, even the bank has no legal right to keep customers login details and other security and password details, so let not get this mixup and hope ops could come out to accept the mistake and correct that part of his statement.

It's better to protect ourselves from physical attacks and stealing rather than being anxious with those factors that OP has mentioned. If you ever found some ATMs that are acting unnatural and they're quite odd in your first glance.

The best thing you can do is to report them to the authorities or to the bank that handles that ATM. I'll take more caution about people that surrounds me whenever I withdraw and use my ATM.

The Op of that thread just don’t know what he or she is saying, didn’t study properly what they are trying to write about before coming here to talk about what don’t exist in a physical ATM machine talk more of extending his talk down to bitcoin ATM machine, even local POS machines don’t show card number talk more of ATM machines.
