Bcon.global - Non Custodial Crypto Payments
|
Rumble's (a video-sharing platform) CEO has stated in a tweet that the company will be releasing a non-custodial wallet for both bitcoin and stablecoins later this year (Q3) to compete with Coinbase: https://x.com/chrispavlovski/status/1920587376126042424I'm not sure why "Coinbase" specifically? because the Coinbase non-custodial wallet is not really that great to start with and it's mainly focused on alts... but he might be referring to the exchange? It's worth mentioning that the company bought 17.1M$ bitcoin for their treasury back in March and is planning to accumulate more in the future.

They're developing a self-custodial wallet, so they must be competing with Coinbase Wallet App. Not because it's good, but because it has their target market. It's about the mainstream and not us, the minority. When choosing wallets, the majority prefer big brands than open-source well-reviewed self-custodial wallets that we usually use. You can easily see how huge its userbase if you check the " Downloads" number stats of Coinbase Wallet app.

I was also a bit hesitant when they mentioned coinbase, because even if they were referring to the Coinbase wallet App, it's not the best wallet reference. I'd be more comfortable if they mentioned alternatives beyond coinbase, wallets such as Electrum, Sparrow, Wasabi, BlueWallet, Green Address etc. The mention of the partnership with Tether indicates that stablecoins such as Tether will be integrated, that is, we will not have a bitcoin-only wallet. This means that to support Tether there must be at least one network that supports this token such as ETH, TRX, etc. Adding more code and increasing complexity and the focus becomes not only on Bitcoin. You're right, but for a new wallet in the space (or any new project), the first good impression is the one that always remains, so that later they don't have to rush to win users more hard in the future. Of all available options, will they use (or declare themselves competitors to) Coinbase as a reference? To me (I might be wrong) this is a sign that they discovered Bitcoin yesterday and this could impact the user experience (or even the security) of the final bitcoin wallet app. Still, it's always good to have more wallet options available, I could be a little wrong now, let's see what happens.

IMO expanding their business from video streaming into cryptocurrency wallet have somewhat big gap, even considering their treasury contains Bitcoin.
But Tether plan to support Lightning Network, so i wonder whether this Rumble wallet will support USDT on LN.

Maybe because coinbase is the biggest centralized in US and rumble is more of privacy.
But its good to have another in in US, rumble seem to be trusted more these days because they allow any videos in their platform even those banned in youtube. However seeing that their wallet only store BTC and USDT, it only limits their capacity. I don't know if they are aware of USDT's nature.

Is it? I do not actually think so. The thing about new wallets like this is that people who have been in the network for a long time and who take their security and privacy seriously wouldn't use it, they would not move from their well-reviewed software, to one that just arrived, which is obviously the right thing to do. So, the target audience is then the newbies and people who don't mind using any wallet, and so the more new wallets like this are created, the higher the chances of vulnerabilities in some of them that wouldn't be easily spotted, which could lead to mass loss of funds.

To those who might be interested, here's a sneak peek of the wallet in question [credit goes to @CoinTelegraph (I wouldn't scroll down that much on X)]: Full-sized image- This is not something that I'd use as my main wallet, but I can see it being useful for Rumble content creators who'd like to receive their payments in crypto (it'd be a great alternative to some of the YouTube MCNs that claim to support Bitcoin payments).

I noticed there are 2 USD stablecoins, does this indicate that there will be a separation between funds? It's great that they will accept XAUT, since gold always appreciates in crises. I thought the suggestions and news were cool (although this is becoming a trend in more modern wallets). I hope this brings more active users to Rumble (it seems that it was banned in my country), because we really need some competition for Youtube. Also, it would be great if content creators received BTC/USDT and etc directly from their wallet (whether it's Rumble or not), giving users more autonomy.

Because most American crypto newbies are putting all their only on the Coinbase exchange - despite all the talk about not your keys, not your coins but I'm sidetracking a bit here - so any US company who wants to make a crypto wallet for casual users is invariably going to use that as a benchmark.

No matter how I look at the pictures, I only see a single USD-based stablecoin [I'm probably missing something here]. However, if you were referring to the different USDT funds, one of them shows the personal wallet, while the other is for a channel on Rumble.

Interesting news, especially knowing that Rumble is of the rear alternative platforms for y0utube without heavy censorship. I think they are using this to improve monetization on their platform and make it more popular. Going back to 2024 Rumble also announced their Bitcoin Treasury Strategy, so it's no surprise they are going in this direction: https://corp.rumble.com/blog/rumble-announces-bitcoin-treasury-strategy/

Small updateAhead of its Q3 launch, Rumble has partnered with MoonPay for its cryptocurrency on and off-ramp solutions: Rumble and MoonPay Strike Exclusive Deal to Fuel Crypto-Creator Revolution- I believe this also means users from "these countries" won't have access to these features in Rumble wallet and based on the majority of their 2/3-star reviews on Trustpilot, it appears that they have high fees.

Ten days ago, Rumble's CEO teased their upcoming wallet again on " X" by revealing its " website". - While I was scrolling through their "TOS page", the last paragraph in section 3.1 caught my attention since this wallet requires its users to go through a KYC process in order to have access to all of its features and failure to do so can lead to suspensions or closures! BTW, they're giving away 1 BTCitcoin to the residents of the US and Switzerland [you can submit your entry until the 31st of October (source)].

The page didn't load for me, so I couldn't verify it, but failure to comply could lead to suspensions or closures (or simply having KYC) already raised a red flag for me. I'll try again later to verify the details.
Like, why would I use a wallet that is supposedly non-custodial but with KYC when there're so many great wallet options already available?
1 BTC? That seemed like a suspicious prize, but I'm not eligible to win this prize anyway, as I'm unfortunately not a resident of these locations.

Same here... Having said that, it still has some potential, but I guess this trade-off would only be acceptable to those Rumble content creators who'd want to receive tips in Bitcoin and a couple of other cryptocurrencies. 1 BTC? That seemed like a suspicious prize,
It's a huge giveaway, but considering that they're somewhat successful and they already " bought a noticeable amount of bitcoin for their treasury [refer to the last line in OP]", I don't think there's going to be an issue with their giveaway.

That sounds nice, but according to their terms wallet can't be used for anyone under 17 years of age, and wallet can't work worldwide. Because of US sanctions some countries and regions are excluded and it's not available for them. I also heard that donations/payments in BTC and crypto to Ruble accounts is only available for US accounts currently. But this is a step in good direction for Bitcoin adoption.

So apparently you need a rumble account to use it at all. I took a 12 word seed that I use for testing and when I entered it it popped a message about no backup found and failed. Also there is a warning about not entering a seed phrase from another wallet only use one created by Rumble Wallet.
Yeah, I'm out.

They had more to earn from creating a Rumble branded non custodial Wallet instead. Give it a nice User Interface, make it easy to use, easy to understand, upload it on GitHub and they would rock the Bitcoin world with their new product. The limits they impose through the terms limit the audience they will get. Particularly considering Rumble still does not have much audience to compete with the beast.

About their self-custodial claim. I can confirm that its 12-word mnemonic seed is at least BIP39 standard and using standard BIP84 derivation path. So, if they ever pull a shutgun KYC stunt, their users can still recover their fund on another BIP39 wallet. But their " Tip Jar" though, it generates a bech32 address that I can't find the correct derivation path. ( not 2nd account, not internal chain nor name as passphrase) They should provide a documentation about it or we'll get a few " I can't restore my Rumble wallet" threads a few years from now. -edit-Found it, it's at the same derivation path as the receiving address but it's the 11th address ( index 10). So, it should also be included when restoring the seed phrase to a different client.
