The need for constitutional review and amendment in Nigeria.

In our country Nigeria, many things are going wrong and our constitution more favourable to our politicians than the common masses. So if the constitution is reviewed and amended their are clauses that should be inculcated in our constitution that can keep our politicians on alignment and reduce corruption.

It should be part of Nigeria construction that any politician in office should keep his or her family here in Nigeria not until their tenure in office elapse before they can take their children abroad. There children should attend school here in Nigeria, and they should take their medical treatment here in Nigeria by so doing the will make this country Nigeria a better place and be able to fix these sectors appropriately.

When you talk of constitution amendment in Nigeria, i don't think it may solve the problems because it will still be written by Human that is why it will not bring any different. The issue with our politicians is that there are not following the constitution or constitution is favoring them, they do all that deliberately to ignore what constitution said and do it the way they like.

All what you have said, had been said by many Nigerians even some of the politicians, but those politicians always said it before they get to office, politicians always like to play us which up to now we had not seeing how their games are played. They only use all sort of good words for campaigning to convince us so that we will have trust in them but when they get there, they turn into an autocratic leader, forgetting all the people that supported them and they entire citizens.

With the current situation of Nigeria now i don't really know what to say, but as I stand now I will not kill myself for anyone because I assume they all behave the same way.

This same politicians you're talking about  are the same set of corrupt people in charge of writing and implementing the constitution we are talking about so it still makes no difference. When the leader are corrupt why will things go well when everyone aspiring for a sensitive position is running after is own personal interests and not for their people.

Their was one news I saw online lately when our worst senate president ever Godswill apkapio  made and am sure they might have signed it in law by now (Cyber bulling act 2025) , a law that will restrict citizens from criticizing the evil going on in our government, they want to completely short citizens up from their fundamental human rights which is freedom of speech. As a matter of fact this law was made and designed by our wicked politicians to prevent and hide their evil dealings from the international audience which will be Total unacceptable. Therefore persistent amendment of the Nigerian constitution is never the way out but an opportunity given to this Old folks to rough handle us.

It's will be very childish and unnecessary if there is a constitution that a politician in office should keep his family in Nigeria. Honestly we have not interest in their family and it is also slavery to the family, how can you keep a person in the country because their dad or mum are in power, it is actually against the human rights if you look at it critically.

If we are looking for a constitution to tackle corrupt politicians then there should be constitution of a very harsh punishment for corruption like life in person or worse. Also a constitution that will cut down the unnecessary benefits that the politicians earns and after office all politicians should be critical checked based on finances and asset home and abroad. We don't care what their family does that's their private business.

Some of the laws that should be included in the constitution of 1999 should include capital offence for corrupt politicians just the way we have ot in some Asian countries. So even when you allow their family members to remain in Nigeria, they will still look for way to steal, but a capital offence will bring fair to their minds. In 2014 the GEJ administration had a national confab to discuss several issues with the constitution, some recommendations where made, since the politicians knew it was not in their favor, they didn't implement it.

What I will wish to be add to the constitution is state or regional autonomy just like the type United states of America operate. Where region will be able to control their resources, schools, hospital, police or law and orders. At least this will bring faster development and accountability to the state people and reduce the power sitting at the top. That structure alone will  provide better governance. The federal power is proving useless to the citizens and aren't hearing voices, perhaps that state will draw the government closer to its people.

Constitutional amendments might not really be the issue even during president Goodluck Jonathan’s administration there was lots of amendments, our issue is not the constitution our issue is greed and corruption, an average Nigeria if given the opportunity to lead in any parastatal will want to steal all the money for himself and his family and generation, we are so interest and money driven that we forget the place of integrity and virtue, every establishment has lay down rules but very few follow it, it’s not about rules it’s about obeying the rules, what we have in most cases is eye service, so i don’t really feel our issue is constitutional amendments, even if they amend everything in the constitution the people that will still implement are this greedy and corrupt politicians, who bought their way to power, most of them are still settling one godfather or the other and they won’t want anything to cut down the cost of governance.

Our development has nothing to do with our constitution if you read through our constitution you will observe that it covered lots of areas if not everything we need, what can really bring about change is when Nigeria sets aside politics and regulate a system of transparency and equality, a system we’re everyone will have a level playing ground, our government has to realize that everything is not politics, certain positions must be based on merit, not until this corruption puzzle is solved things can’t change.

Your opinion to review the constitution is a good one because of how favorable it is to the politicians, my questions on that is who will review the constitution, is it not also the same set of political representatives whom for there sake we are having a rethink on reviewing and amending the constitution.
Even if the constitution is reviewed today it will definitely fall in there favour because they are still the once going to do it and it must be in there favour that is the extend we have gone in Nigeria today

No be lie you yarn for here. Making an amendment to the constitution go only mean say make the lawmakers input laws wey go only favor them. Recently, after the altercation wey Wike and that soldier get, I read say one lawmaker bin dey suggest say these soldiers obey every instruction any Minister give them since them dey under civilian rule and not military one, so imagine if such a thing com dey carried out or inputted in the constitution, who go suffer? Nah still the poor masses so I no really see any need for an amendment

Who are going to review d constitution?  The same politicians which the current constitution is benefiting them, why do you think they are going to review it? We all know our politicians to be so selfish, as long as it’s benefiting them. This would have been a very good idea, but I am very sure that it will not work even if they amend the constitution and its stated clearly in it. Nigeria politicians are bigger than the constitution or laws of the country. They will not adhere to it and it will just be the same old story. Their kids will still school abroad and they will still take medical treatments abroad,  so I don't see the need to amend the constitution,  because it will not be followed. The problem of Niger is the people, they fail to realize that the power is in their hands. Rigging in elections is very easy because they still get votes and a lot of people refuse to exercise their franchise,  which make it more easy for them to rig elections. The day the people realize that power is in there hands and they all speak in one voice, then we will see a lot positive changes in Nigeria.

State or regional Autonomy woukd l be a welcome development as each state or region will be allowed to manage its own resources and pay taxes to the Federal. Powers and responsible will be shared between the Federal and State. States would be allow to own it's state police, supreme Court and unicameral legislative houses  but we could only imagine it here in Nigeria as the Federal government and some Northern entities wouldn't allow it because they believe the North will become poorer if that is allowed to happen.

The good recommendation you have given as part of building a better Nigeria should definitely be a consideration. Most of the children of politicians study abroad. They do not consider the education system in this country to be of quality. They will not strive to build a quality education system because their children will not study in this country. The same situation is in the health sector, even if someone in their family gets a slight fever they seek treatment abroad. It is a sign of how weak patriotism is among them that they do not work for the development of the country they live in. Most politicians do politics to launder the country's wealth through corruption. Their aim is to establish ownership of huge wealth that is why they do politics not for the development of the country but for looting as a result we still live in poverty.

Yep you are right about the northern. Their leaders are so soaked in corruption, they have no regards for their people. The federal government will give allocation for development of their state, Instead they will be using it for something else like hajj pilgrimage, mass wedding. Whereas they are Almajiri kids roaming and begging in streets all over Nigeria. The livelihood there is very poor, they born without no regards on how to take care of their kids. This allocation that federal government give these northerners are from the revenue that are being generated in the south in terms of oil, economic trade etc. They are easily controlled especially during election period, they give sympathy for terrorism. While their leaders are there sending their kids to abroad. I shouldn't lie they drag Nigeria backward according to statistics, poverty rate , terrorism etc so if  that state or region autonomy happens, only your region will enjoy what they gain.
