Here is a very interesting article by the Electronic Frontier Foundation on "How Big Pharma's Shadow Regulation Censors the Internet" https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/09/how-big-pharmas-shadow-regulation-censors-internet The article does not mention Monero at all but it does identify the role of shadow regulation in censoring payment processors. In this case to deny medicines at an affordable price to people in need for the furtherance of corporate greed and the "protection of intellectual property". When dealing with pharmaceuticals this can in many cases be a matter of life and death.

A fungible, private and anonymous, crypto currency that is not constrained by artificial limits on the number transactions per second, can actually save people's lives.

At the payment processor level, yes they would not be able to censor monero payments.

But there still exists the issue of censoring actual domain names and confiscation at the border when importing these prescription drugs.

Thanks for the article, I had not known of such ridiculous laws. But i'm not surprised either.

Apparently confiscation is not the major issue, payments and domains/hosting/blocking of sites are:

I dont know...the market is actually not so hard to rumble. Maybe i think to easy, but thats what i thought:

After the FUD Campaign it is somehow given by nature that the coin cannot get under more pressure having in mind that panic sells were happening for 3 weeks.

Moreover the coin was before the announcement of Alphabay at something 0.005 (can we agree?)

For sure 0.005 would never happen again. So the worse point could be at 0.0085.

Take: y = mx+t
The negative slope was already decreasing at ~104, faster and faster. For me the final bottom was next to  --> BUY.

Actually the FUD campaign made things a lot more easy here  Cool

Whats your oppinion about that @BitcoinNewsMagazine?

I am wary as a double bottom might just happen. Then again it might not but the daily volume on the sell off on Oct 4 was not that high. Some bad news could cause another sell off. Looking at the daily chart impresses as a coin that has not found a bottom yet so I am in no rush to reload.

I guess the "major issue" must be defined by each individual as the quote you posted claims that some prescription medications are allowed to be imported in 90-day supply amounts.

Not sure how much is "some".

Trade wars between countries has begun and will likely accelerate over the coming years. Such a barrier at the border/customs will likely only get worse as world trade unravels due to global recession.

As a newbie in crypto trading I am too scared to hold very volatile altcoins overnight. I made 2 buy and sell today with Monero. Was thinking of setting some stop/limit but I may just end up losing it so i'll better return tomorrow. Wink

One has not to do with the other... problem with Polo is that they have many dust outputs from the people that mine directly to exchange... so the average tx is bigger and more costly... but guess they may lower it in the near future

Dont use stop-limits or sell when the price is falling, in most cases the fall is only temporarry. Just buy below 0.012 and sell above 0.02, it's that simple.

My buddy just came back from Columbia and brought 3 months meds back. It cost him dollars for what cost him hundreds here.

I hear stories like this all the time, but really, how does one get drugs across borders / customs without hassles?

Edit - Me being in the USA, maybe it's a dumb question right hahaha.

...

But there still exists the issue of censoring actual domain names and confiscation at the border when importing these prescription drugs.

Thanks for the article, I had not known of such ridiculous laws. But i'm not surprised either.

The issue here is not the law or government regulation but rather the monopolistic actions of multinational corporations. The importation may be perfectly legal and above board; however a multinational pharmaceutical company can still prevent it by partnering with another multinational payments company or companies. This will work if the partners have a monopoly or are very close to a monopoly in payments. The weak point here is payments because of the high degree of corporate concentration. There no where near the same degree of corporate concentration in domain name registration than there is in payments. For example one can easily move a domain from GoDaddy to EasyDNS or Gandi; but try to avoid say Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and one or two major banks acting in concert. The latter is how Wikileaks was blockaded and nearly bankrupted.

We must keep that are dealing with perfectly legal activities here; but that would not prevent a group of monopolistic multinational corporations from mounting a payments blockade even though such a blockade would be illegal in many jurisdictions. Hence the term shadow regulation. Breaking such an illegal payments blockade is something which Monero could very easily excel at.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

I wonder what needs to happen that Poloniex change their withdrawal fee to be less then 20 times expensive as withdrawing BTC.

They will have to standardize denominations is all. Right now they are allowing people to just click "send all" and dropping 12 decimal places worth of precision into transactions.

Heck honestly the dev team should consider limiting precision beyond any reasonable threshold until the price rises. Maybe 0.00001 at the absolute most. It would cut back on sooo much blockchain spam.

But either way, even if not that, polo should limit it to 0.001 which is around 0.01 USD worth of precision. More than enough for any practical application and would cut back on the fees they are paying tremendously.

any chance of BTC price rise soon ?

yes?

EDIT
50K+ volume  in 15 mins....in the middle of the night US time and traditionally a slow time for this market.
So, either the Chinese have entered the room or someone is having a deliberate late night in order to catch out sleeping shorters.  Some serious action in the next 18 hours.

I like the Polobox atm a bit more than the positive DNM news Smiley So much ppl. obv. ran too late into a short position with XMR and are very afraid of being liquidated Cheesy

btw. positive news from AlphaBay, larger usage:

Quote
This is an important announcement regarding the "auto accounts" section on Alphabay. On Sunday, October 9th 2016 at 09:00 Moscow time, the "auto accounts" section will be removed from Alphabay.

The credit card autoshop will remain unaffected and will continue to work as normal. All vendors who are selling data on the "auto accounts" shop will have 72 hours to move their data to the newly created sections in "Accounts & Bank Drops" subsection of "Fraud" section, and make listings for the data.

If you still wish to have your sales automatically fulfilled like before, don't forget to add your data to the "auto-fulfill" list and your buyers will continue to receive their orders like before.

There are many reasons behind this change, the main ones being:
1) Over time, the "auto accounts" section has been littered by so much rubbish data and people using ASCII tricks to confuse the search results;
2) The "auto accounts" section was making it easier for scammers to operate without getting caught due to rudimentary feedback system;
3) It will now be easier to manage a single system for all purchases, giving the possibility to vendors to build feedback with their sales;
4) It will now be possible to accept Monero for those accounts;
5) It will help clean up the listings by offering appropriate categories rather than a throwaway "Others" category.

Pending "auto accounts" disputes will be promptly taken care of. FE-approved vendors may request FE for their newly-created listings by setting the correct "payment method" while editing the listing.

This is HUGE. Dark net markets embraces and increase use of Monero like BTC early days!  Shocked Shocked
