Nice! Kano, I've been meaning to ask. Why are our blocks never over 888KB? Why keep them from being as close to 1MB as possible?

Nice! Kano, I've been meaning to ask. Why are our blocks never over 888KB? Why keep them from being as close to 1MB as possible?

Sorry, didn't phrase my question properly. I know they're set to 888,888 max. I was wondering what made you pick that number, is it as simple as 8 being your favourite number or something? Also, why limit it at all? Block propagation speed? Sorry if you've explained this already, I haven't read the whole thread.

Just a wild guess here: 8 is a 'lucky' number in some cultures.  Though I don't believe in superstition because it's bad luck...

Basically to keep it a small amount under the limit.

Originally it was being a small pool vs a bunch of very large pools that rarely filled up their blocks and do all sorts of bad things.

Now, there's no real reason other than to keep a small limit below, coz I don't like pushing the limit and finding it failing for whatever reason there might be by accident in core bitcoind ...

One minor problem with bitcoind is that you can't tell it to change that limit without shutting it down and restarting it.
Since I now run 3 bitcoind on the main server it's not that much of an issue to switch settings I guess.
I guess I could move it up to say ... 988,888 if everyone is happy with that.
Gotta cover my paranoia of not touching that limit
Yeah we do really put out our block changes very fast now so there's certainly no reason to not have it at least a bit higher.

Just interested why 3 bitcoind on the same server?  I understand they are specified as backups to ckpool and maybe connected to different nodes but will you share detals?

Think it's as simple as keeping the pool running if one instance of bitcoind were to crash. Redundancy.

Yeah it wont actually make much of a change in the amount of fees coz the tail end of the block of course gets filled with the lower fee or fee free transactions.

But I guess since blocks really are quite full now most of the time, that will be a small increase.

Pity about garzik and the rest of the core cronies scamming everyone with BIP100 that they (now) clearly never intended to implement.
They want side chains that require blocks running out of space, not having space to grow, so that's most likely the reason for suggesting BIP100 but (now) clearly never intending to implement it.
Even their latest "segregated witness" they want to push hard and fast is another element of their side chain agenda.
I even contacted garzik about BIP100 months ago and he never bothered to reply.

Think it's as simple as keeping the pool running if one instance of bitcoind were to crash. Redundancy.

Yep that's the original reason without a doubt.

Now I run 3 coz the 3rd one is a more standard bitcoind that, in the completely unexpected event of there being a problem with our much faster bitcoinds, there's always the final 3rd local fallback.
Using a remote bitcoind for any reason is a bad idea IMO.
