I see that the DeepOnion software uses 16 active connections, it that a max set in the client? Would it help to have more connections or is 16 considered more than enough

16 connections for deeponion wallet is enought.
But if you want to have more then 16 connection you can port forward in your modem nad have much more connections.

There is no Need to update it to receive the airdrop! However it is recommended to use the newest Version of the wallet! But since it can not be checked by the crawler which wallet Version you are using (you can simply stay offline for example), it does not affect the airdrop Distribution.

i think it depending on the number of node in the  .conf  file! may be you could add more node in you conf file.and see if there is more connections.

16 connections are enough for the average staking wallet. If you want more connections you add this line to your deeponion.conf file:

maxconnections=32

There's no need to ever open a wallet software to get coins.  All you have to do is have the private key to a public address, which you have in that wallet.  The coins don't exist on your computer or in your wallet.  Your wallet simply stores the keys that access coins on the public blockchain.
