Glad i bought again , still painfull i have a seedphrase with 11 words on it , this was used in the beginning of xmr(monero), never found an option to br8ng them up again because now the new version since long time ago needs 12 words , but still happy anyway I bought again

Do you remember what wallet it was?

I don't think Monero ever had an 11-word seed phrase. It had a 13-word seed phrase. My Monero used that. It had 25, which is the standard.  And since then, we've seen the development of some of the phrases which include a time stamp, like the 14-word seed phrase.

There are tools you can use to manipulate the seed phrase or uncover private keys.  There was a fork of the BIP 39 tool that included Monero and could even create a 25-word Monero seed from a 24-word Bitcoin seed, which uses the algorithm that Ledger and others used to derive a Monero seed phrase from a Bitcoin seed phrase.

Some third party wallet used 11 for some stupid ass reason IIRC.

But I have no clue what it was, this pops up here every so often and I think the only hope is to find that program and get the private key from it or find out the algo it used which basically comes down to the same issue of finding out what wallet it was.

If it was really old there might be a possibility it is not really using seed phrases at all in the more-modern sense;

In HORIZON for example, and thus possibly in the NXT from which it was cloned/derived, a phrase was generated as sort of a suggested pass-phrase but really the system simply uses the entire string as a private key so that you can add words, change words, not use words at all, even just use a single space character as passphrase or whatever.

I came here to post on my computer yesterday that it seems notable to me that monero has been recovering alongside Bitcoin after this recent dip. While the pump and dump of Zcash seems to be deflating rapidly.

Seems I forgot to hit the post button, though.

At the time Monero had, once again, overtaken Zcash, market cap.  But was still below it in price.

And as of today, Zcash is still going down, but Monero is continuing to recover upwards.  And this is actually happening on a day that is flat to red across most crypto.

Makes me wonder, do you think the Zcash pump and dump scammers are running their coins either back into or through Monero so that they can actually have some privacy?  🤔😁

I did hear awhile back that ZEC pump and dumps coincide with Monero upswings right after so I would not doubt those ZEC pump and dump shitcoiners are holding in Monero.

Also apparently another mixer got busted so that can only be good for a chain that doesn't need nor use mixing.

Every now and then I go on Reddit. I don't know why I do this. Despite the in fact, I was a Reddit moderator for a large sub for a few years.  No badge of honor, really. Most Reddit moderators seem to me to be horrible people. In fact, most people who hang out on Reddit seem to be a mess. Okay, enough complaining and judgmentalism.

When poking around, of course, I visit the Monero sub because it's actually sometimes a good place to look stuff up, but oh, the natives are restless. The upcoming changes to Monero, which they make sound like we're almost removing the privacy altogether and dropping ring signatures?  And it sounds like they're adding some sort of God-mode view key that once someone has it, they can see everything that you've done now in the past and in the future?  I really need to catch up.

So I'm going to poke around, but if anybody has a short TLDR hit me with it, I'm also going to look at John's fabulous newsletter to see what he has to say. He usually covers it quite well.

Cool, give us the tldr as well, i've been to busy to get into it.

Whenever I have time to post now I don't want to be doing research.

AFA reddit goes, yeah its what it is a shithole created for moderation and dogpiling those that don't pull the party line.

Actually, John's newsletter is wonderful, and the guy deserves a trophy for keeping up with that so well for so long.

Nice job John.  Please either post an address here or message me one where I can send you a pittance of a donation.

Yeah, I feel kind of dumb for not having kept up with this, but the plan for full chain membership proofs (fcmp) seems to be about to be released.

They've been talking about this for quite some time, but it promises to be a substantial increase to Monero's privacy, moving it from probabilistic to provable. Basically, instead of 16-member ring signatures, we share membership with every single transaction on the chain.

I was going to go a little deeper into what the implications and risks of this are for posterity here in the thread, but I just happened to bumble across a fabulously well-written article on the subject, hopefully accurate, but here you go.

https://baltex.io/blog/ecosystem/monero-fcmp-plus-plus-upgrade-explained-xmr-users

Some of the other changes I hear, the Reddit people squawking about, I haven't found the details about yet, like the extra powerful view keys, etc.

Okay, and then the other piece of the upgrade that people are wigging out over is CARROT.

And the bit that people seem to be tripping over is the idea that what Carrot is actually doing is turning Monero into sort of a mirror image of Zcash, but instead of being public by default with optional privacy, this would make Monero private by default with optional full transparency.

What this means is everything is as private as it ever was, but there is a new, more powerful view key, which will just show everything in the past, present, and future for a set of hierarchical addresses tied to one master private key.

The negative take is that with that being possible we could see demands for that being made available to third parties increase perhaps at exchanges to be compliant for governments, for example.

I do not yet know how much of that is overblown paranoia and how much of it is a little dose of caution.

I could see this evolving into an ecosystem where exchanges like U.S. Kraken continue to use Monero as they always have, but perhaps this view key could make monaro tradable in other jurisdictions. But the problem is, the more people who have access to information, the less secure the whole thing is, it hurts everyone's privacy.

Anyway, I'm sure that this has been argued to the ends of the earth somewhere, but unfortunately I have been slipping on keeping up a little bit.

And I finally want to add all of what I said above is stuff I have no real opinion on yet. I'm not saying any of those things are true or that it's dangerous or that it's not. I don't know. I have some reading to do, I guess.

Sorry, there's something I forgot to add. I'm going to just make a new post rather than edit that one again.

The counterpoint to all of the above paranoia or caution is pretty simple. The current version of the software can already do what people are afraid of using the current viewkey system.

And that the improvements in the addressing format are worth the update. And this is just a harmless way to make it easier for people to make their wallets transparent.
